Scientists Discover A Fundamental Mechanism For Cell Organization

Program Once Reserved For Alabama Inmates With HIV/AIDS Expanded To All Inmates
The Alabama Department of Corrections has expanded to all inmates a re-entry program that provides newly released inmates with HIV/AIDS "with information on obtaining licenses [and] other documents and preparing for returning to life outside prison," the AP/USA Today/Montgomery Advertiser reports (Hunter, 7/22). "In the past, prisoners at the end of their sentences were sent back into the free world with minimal assistance, not the in-depth services the inmates with HIV and AIDS had received," according to AP/WZTV.com. The expanded Alabama Prison Initiative will allow all inmates to enroll in classes that provide them with "practical tips" and guidance "that will hopefully help keep them from returning," the AP/WZTV.com reports (7/22). AIDS Alabama CEO Kathie Hiers said, "We"ve seen it help so much in the HIV community. They"re smart to take a good program and expand it" (Hunter, 7/22).

Artificial Liver For Drug Tests
If you have hay fever, headaches or a cold, it"s only a short way to the nearest chemist. The drugs, on the other hand, can take eight to ten years to develop. Until now animal experiments have been an essential step, yet they continue to raise ethical issues. "Our artificial organ systems are aimed at offering an alternative to animal experiments," says Professor Heike Mertsching of the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB in Stuttgart. "Particularly as humans and animals have different metabolisms. 30 per cent of all side effects come to light in clinical trials." The test system, which Professor Mertsching has developed jointly with Dr. Johanna Schanz, should in future give pharmaceutical companies greater security and shorten the path to new drugs. Both researchers received the "Human-centered Technology" prize for their work.

Zogenix Obtains Approval In U.S. For Sumavel™ DosePro™

Aradigm Corporation (OTC BB: ARDM.OB) ("Aradigm") announced that Zogenix, Inc. was granted approval of the Sumavel™ DosePro™ (sumatriptan injection) needle-free delivery system which enables subcutaneous delivery of sumatriptan without a needle for the treatment of acute migraine. Aradigm is entitled to a $4 million milestone payment upon first commercial sale, and royalty payments upon any sales of products in the U.S. and other countries, including the European Union, which may be developed and sold using the DosePro technology. Sumavel DosePro uses the novel, proprietary DosePro drug delivery system to subcutaneously administer sumatriptan, a medication that has been used to treat migraines effectively and safely for over fifteen years, but without many of the issues associated with needle delivery. Sumavel DosePro has the potential of offering migraine relief beginning in as little as ten minutes, in a system sufferers can self administer in three easy steps. Given the unique attributes of Sumavel DosePro, Zogenix believes it has the potential to be used as a replacement for needle-based injectable forms of sumatriptan, as well as to replace tablet and nasal spray triptans for challenging migraine episodes. Migraine affects approximately 30 million people in the United States. Patients suffer with extreme pain, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound, making it difficult to undertake work or other activities. Because of this, speed of relief is a key attribute identified by migraine patients when choosing a medication. In August 2006, Aradigm sold all of its assets related to the Intraject™ needle-free injector technology platform and products, including 12 United States patents along with foreign counterparts, to Zogenix, Inc., a private company. Zogenix is responsible for development and commercialization efforts of Intraject (now rebranded under the name DosePro). Aradigm
