Better Outcomes With Computer Aided Surgery - High Costs As An Obstacle To Broad Use
There are many indications that computer aided surgery has a major role to play in improving results in orthopaedic surgery, says Dr. Stefano Zaffagnini, who has played a pioneering role in the use of this technology and who moderates a symposium on this theme at the Congress of the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT), taking place from June 3 to 6 in Vienna, with more than 8,000 participants from around the world. This technology should allow total knee prosthesis using minimally invasive surgery to become a standard procedure within a decade. Osteotomy and hip operations are only two of the many other fields where computer aided surgery can also markedly improve results for patients, experts state at the EFFORT Congress in Vienna.

Risk Of Dialysis Access Failure Reduced By Combination Of Aspirin And Anti-Clotting Drug
For the first time, a combination of aspirin and the anti-platelet drug dipyridamole has been shown to significantly reduce blockages and extend the useful life of new artery-vein access grafts used for hemodialysis, according to a study by the Dialysis Access Consortium (DAC). The study, supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health, will be published in the May 21, 2009, New England Journal of Medicine.

House To Consider Amendment To HHS Bill To Limit Funding To Planned Parenthood Clinics

The House on Friday is expected to pass its fiscal year 2010 Labor-HHS-Education spending bill (HB 3293) after considering several Republican amendments addressing the bill"s price tag and certain policy priorities, CQ Today reports. The bill would appropriate $730.5 billion, making it the largest of the 12 annual appropriations bills. A vote is expected on a GOP amendment, offered by Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), to prohibit family planning funding through the Title X program to Planned Parenthood clinics. Other expected amendments will seek to ban NIH from funding grants to research the HIV/AIDS risks associated with alcohol and substance abuse among sex workers in Asia and to strip language that would lift the ban on federal funding for needle exchange programs (Wolfe, CQ Today, 7/23).In related news, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Thursday said the Senate would not vote on a health care reform bill until after Congress returns from its August recess, the New York Times reports (Herszenhorn/Zeleny, New York Times, 7/24).
