Advance In Detecting Melamine-adulterated Food
Researchers in Indiana are reporting an advance toward faster, more sensitive tests for detecting melamine, the substance that killed at least 6 children and sickened 300,000 children in China who drank milk and infant formula adulterated with the substance. The improved tests may ease global concerns about food safety, the researchers say. Their report is scheduled for the May 27 issue of ACS" Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a bi-weekly publication.

Merck Partners With Non-Profit For Neglected Diseases Initiative
The pharmaceutical company, Merck, announced Monday it was partnering with the non-profit Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) in an effort to improve treatments for neglected tropical diseases (NTD), the AP/CNBC reports. "The agreement covers drug candidates for illnesses like visceral leishmaniasis and Chagas disease, potentially lethal parasitic illnesses spread by insects. Current treatment for those illnesses may be toxic, or very expensive, or difficult to administer, Merck said," AP/CNBC writes (AP/CNBC, 6/22).

CMA Condemns Shooting Of Kansas Doctor

The California Medical Association issued the following statement about the tragic shooting of Dr. George Tiller of Kansas: "The killing of Dr. George Tiller is outrageous and appalling, and California physicians join many across the country in sending their condolences and best wishes to Dr. Tiller"s family, colleagues and patients. "Our nation has a long, respectful tradition of establishing public policy through an active democracy and its responsive institutions. To kill, harm or harass any health professional engaged in the legal practice of medicine runs counter to everything our country stands for.
